At one time I was intrested in getting a NC Commercial License, and while the thought occasionally crosses my mind still, everthing I'm reading leads me to believe that it really isnt worth the effort anymore.

I just got through reading through all the SAFMC crap and unless you carry the Snapper/Grouper permit, and/or the King Permit, it doesn't look like the NC Commecial license is really worth it anymore.

My reasoning for the license would have been to cover fuel costs on some of the trips we make. Flounder would still be an option but I don't target them often anymore unless I'm speafishing inshore.

It would also seem like some people would be dumping them at lower costs with the additional requirements now. I.E. the 2 for 1 grouper snapper permit.

Anythoughts would be greatly appreciated.

My thoughts, Leave the commercial fishing to people who need to make a living and don't use there highway to subsidize your hobby.. just a thought

I think the requirements are going to get tougher.
The 2 for 1 has been around since the 90's
But If you buy an incorporated Snapper/grouper permit you don't need the
2 for 1. But its almost twice the cost.
If i'm not mistaken, I think you can still sell
Wahoo, Dolphin, Tuna's and those permits might still be open.(But Check First)
As long as you have a state permit.

I have the standard license and here's what I can sell
There may be more....
Shellfish with the endorsement
Inshore species, flounder, mullet, spot, shrimp, trout, etc...
Federal Tuna permit cost around $25 yearly, Bluefin, Yellowfin, Blackfin, etc...
Dolphin, Wahoo, yearly federal permit around $80

There are some other benefits to holding a license, I'm sure some others can chime in on it.

If you want to get one, I would suggest to get dialed in with a good fish house so you will have a sale and they can let you know what permits and equipment you may need

You might want to try leasing someones to see if it is worth it that's what I just did. I am going to try it for a year and see how it works out.

Make sure you check to see if you need any additional, or different, safety equipment as a commercial vessel. There was some conversation over the last two years about it, but I don't remember the specifics. Cane and Joe should be able to help you.

Even of you don't sell any fish you benefit from the tax write off of all your fishing expenses.

The expensive equipment needed is an epirb and if your beyond 12 miles a life raft
I personally believe everyone fishing should have a epirb on board....
The other items needed are not too costly and great things to have, when things go wrong on the water you'll be glad you have it....

My uncle did commercial spearfishing for a while. It's hard work but it's worth it. You can do it, man. I like spearfishing myself, altho just as a hobby. I often use these Mares Razor Pro fins https://hikezone.org/best-freediving-fins/ There are best freediving fins reviews on this website. Should you need advice on other equipment, I'll be glad to help you buddy. Good luck!

I got rid of mine several years ago. Unless you are making 60-70% or more of your income from commercial fishing it will never be worth it. I hear guys always b*tching about fuel cost. Man, fuel is nothing! Add up all you spend on bait, ice, rigs, tackle, boat maintenance and repairs, insurance, trailer repairs, ect, so on, and so forth. Fuel is a very small part of the equation.

Work on setting your boat up for the best economy and trim some of the other expenses and you will be better off in the long run. I wrote an article about fuel economy a few years ago that is in the archives on this site. It is worth the read.
