There have been reports by commercials and a few recs that the inlet has become very shoaled up on the bar. Hear of a 23' single outboard bouncing off the bar at low tide at the bottom of a wave 2 times. Have heard multiple reports of white water all the way across the bar.
Be careful.
Army Corps is supposed to survey again in early April.

If you heard that from chip he was talking about me..when we went out a few weeks ago it was shallow! STI is the only inlet I go out of know it pretty well but it seems like this year it's been different every time I go out.

est922, Can you navigate it at low tide or is it shallow at high tide as well. I know when I went out at the end of the year it was a little pucker factor going out. It doesn't sound very safe going into the new year. Thanks for all the help.

We broke the inlet around 7 and low tide was at 8 so it was pretty much there. Low tide is the only struggle

Haven't been up there in a while, but using the boating app at home or the chart viewer online for free always gives me an idea of what to expect when planning.

Hate to say it, but that chart is useless right now. The buoys are accurate, but shoaling has occurred throughout the “channel” the buoys mark. Would not depend on that during a low tide or low light travel without thoroughly checking planned route under daylight conditions.

Can anyone tell me if the same track that I used back in late October out of Topsail would still be about the same line as you are using now.I know I would still need to read the water when heading out but would my track from last year be a good starting point. I have looked at the latest survey but just wanted to ask from someone who has been out a few times this year. I would be coming down Banks Channel. Thanks for the help.

The track you likely ran last October is a good starting point if you ran from the backside of Topsail. BUT the track is slightly right of last years run and once you “see” the new route it pretty much is a straight shot but you end up way right of where you ended up in the ocean last year. The outside mouth is more towards Lee Island than in the past. Suggest a daylight run the first time. Don’t get too far right because it’s shoals quickly. Was pretty easy to read 3 weeks ago. We found 4.5’ at low tide going out.
