Just heard from a very reliable source (a local well know charter captain) that some one has installed two 12" anchor balls in Carolina Beach Inlet. Apparently they were trying to mark the channel. These balls are very small and have NO reflective tape on them. They will be impossible to see in the dark. They are also in the center of the very narrow channel. The Coast Guard has been alerted hopefully they will dispatch a small boat and pull these markers before someone gets the rode wrapped around a prop. Please be careful. To the individual that placed them. I am sure your intention was good. But please leave this to the people who know best.

Confirmed saw them yesterday. They are on the south side of the inlet . One is red and the other is white.

vigilante buoys are somewhat the norm to mark moving channels. Up at Hatteras the fleet pretty much marked it themselves as well.
The reason people go and do it is because the people "who know best" don't have the budget to do it.

I truly understand and somewhat agree, but please make them so they are not a hazard to navigation. Some reflective tape would at least make it noticeable in the dark especially because the are almost the size of a Clorox bottle. As I said the individual had a good purpose in mind. But that inlet is bad enough without running over a unseen small buoy in the dark.
